Importance of Prisoner Transport Vans and Vehicles:

Leading public safety agencies use our prisoner transport vans for many important reasons including:

Safety: The safety of officers and prisoners is paramount.  These prisoner transport vehicles are specifically designed to safely transport individuals to different facilities, appointments and/or judicial hearings. They can easily be equipped with multiple secure compartments for required separation and to prevent prisoners from escaping or causing harm to themselves, officers, or other inmates.

Efficiency: Transporting multiple prisoners at once is a large cost savings measure, saving valuable resources and staff hours. This allows officers to move multiple inmates and prisoner groups between facilities such as detention centers or courthouses, without needing multiple vehicles and officers.

Security: Our prisoner transport vans are fortified with features like reinforced walls, secure handcuffing areas, and separation between prisoners to prevent legal liabilities, conflicts and escape attempts. This ensures that prisoners remain where they should be at all times during transit.

Officer Safety: The secure design of these vans keeps officers at a safe distance from prisoners. It provides a secure barrier between the officer and the person being transported which reduces the risk of physical confrontations during and after transport.

Standardized procedures and equipment: Having specific vehicle types for prisoner transportation ensures that the process for moving detainees remains consistent, which is important for record-keeping and compliance with legal requirements.

ADA / Wheelchair lift options: Some versions are designed specifically to be ADA prisoner transports with wheelchair lifts in order to transport inmates in wheelchairs or restraint chairs as needed.

What is a prisoner transport van?

Prisoner transport vans are essential for municipalities and correctional facilities, playing a pivotal role in the safe and secure movement of inmates. This transport system not only safeguards the individuals being transported but also prioritizes the safety of the correctional officers and the public. While many people might picture prisoner transport as merely a standard bus filled with inmates, the reality is much more nuanced. There is a diverse range of transport vehicles available, each designed to meet specific operational requirements and provide unique advantages.

At Quality Vans & Specialty Vehicles, we focus on developing customized prisoner transport solutions that cater to the distinct needs of our public safety clients. We understand that effective inmate transport is not a one-size-fits-all approach; hence, we offer a variety of vehicles, each designed with safety, efficiency, and utility in mind.

Among the most frequently utilized options are our specially designed vans. These vehicles come with numerous benefits that set them apart from competitors. Firstly, the smaller footprint of these vans contributes to heightened fuel efficiency, which translates into cost savings over time—a crucial consideration for municipalities and correctional facilities operating within budget constraints.  A unique subset are designed as ADA prisoner transports so that public agencies don’t have to rely on 3rd parties to transport inmates in wheelchairs.

Quality Vans & Specialty Vehicle’s prisoner transport vans are perfectly suited for transporting inmates to court appearances, medical appointments, and other necessary locations. Their compact dimensions allow for quick and seamless deployment, particularly in areas with tight streets or underdeveloped roadways that may pose challenges for larger vehicles. This flexibility is especially beneficial in smaller communities where the volume of prisoner transportation needs is generally lower but still maintaining the highest safety and efficiency is important.

Prisoner Transport Van Benefits:

Our Prisoner Transport Vehicles are built for durability and long-term use. Unlike other models that claim to be easily transferable in specific rare occasions, our custom vehicles are designed to last with additional space from being built out to the specialty vehicles walls and purposefully designed A/C systems to keep your agency within compliance requirements. With in-house fabrication, we ensure that prisoner transport vehicles remain reliable and easy to clean for decades. This commitment to durability not only reduces liability but enhances safety and is proven to be the most cost-effective solution over time.

All of our prisoner transport vehicle walls are covered in aluminum sheets to ensure they are tamper proof, this is complemented by our in-house fabricated cages framed with steel and covered with expanded steel sheet and then powder coated. This distinctive design effectively separates the driver and three groups of transported inmates, ensuring their security. Camera options can maintain a clear visual of sight for improved visibility and safety. Each vehicle includes multiple compartments as desired to safely transport inmates with varying offense levels or separation needs, further enhancing security and reducing liability.

The internal cages of our vehicles are a testament to our commitment to quality. They consist of in-house fabricated metal frames covered in expanded steel sheet for visibility on the doors that are secured by heavy-duty latches.  The cages then receive a heavy-duty powder coating. Additionally, the central compartments come equipped with key-locked pull-through hatches, offering an alternative exit in case of an emergency. These safety features are designed to instill confidence in the performance of our prisoner transport vehicles.

Our custom-made Prisoner Transport Vehicles aren’t just safe and reliable; they’re also designed for efficiency. We maximize space to streamline the loading and unloading of inmates, making the process quick and hassle-free. Our highly insulated and climate-controlled design fosters better visibility and enhances air circulation, creating a cooler or warmer legal environment as required for both inmates and transport personnel. This efficient design is a testament to our commitment to smooth operations.

Prisoner Transport Vans and Prisoner Transport Vehicle Design:

Our Prisoner Transport Vehicles, built with durability in mind, prioritize safety above all else while also offering extensive customization options to suit your unique needs. We recognize that various transportation circumstances call for different solutions, which is why our vehicles come in a wide array of shapes, sizes, and capacities. This diversity allows us to provide tailored options that accommodate any number of inmates your agency needs to transport at any given time.

One of our options is an in-house fabricated box truck, which can be outfitted with our custom cages designed to securely house inmates during transport. For longer trips with even larger quantities of prisoners, we have traditional bus designs available, featuring multiple rows of open seating all the way through the back. This layout allows for easier staff access while keeping inmates secured on extended trips.

To enhance safety and visibility, our vehicles can be fitted with divided seats inside custom cages that can include plexiglass windows or solid stainless-steel sheeting depending on your preference. This upgrade not only improves visibility for the driver but also guarantees that inmates requiring extra containment for safety reasons can be securely transported.

In addition to our larger vehicles, we also offer smaller transport solutions like vans, which are particularly well-suited for quick court transportation or transfer to other facilities. These vans are designed for easy access, enabling any officer or staff member to operate them without needing a commercial driver’s license (CDL). This accessibility makes them an appealing option for transporting inmates, especially for local duties such as court appearances or hospital visits.

These smaller vehicles are not only practical. But also, a prudent choice. They use less fuel and incur lower maintenance expenses than larger buses, making them a sensible choice for Counties / agencies looking to stick to their budgets. Their compact size also allows for more excellent maneuverability in rural areas and narrow city streets, facilitating quicker and more efficient dispatch. This means these smaller vans can be easily deployed more often, making them an invaluable asset to your transportation fleet.  Our most popular request is for ADA prisoner transports that help agencies reduce liability by accommodating prisoners in wheelchairs.

Prisoner Transport Vehicles Size Options:

Low roof prisoner transport vans allow for the transportation of 12-14 inmates.  Our prisoner transports have a higher capacity because we build our units out from wall to wall allowing for maximum efficiency while avoiding dead space in between the cage walls and the vehicle walls.

Mid roof prisoner transport vans accommodate 7-14 inmates depending on the desired configuration.  If the van is built with a wheelchair lift, then the number of inmate capacity would be towards the lower end per this example below.

Truck prisoner transports with custom box shelters can be designed to accommodate larger number of prisoners including those with disabilities needing wheelchair accommodations.  Typically, these configurations hold 30 or less inmates.

Large Prisoner Transport Truck

Quality Vans & Specialty Vehicles can even build large coach buses designed to transport up to 55 people during a single trip.  These vehicles are the largest option for transporting high numbers of inmates and often require a CDL driver’s license in order to operate.

Prisoner Transport Van options and accessories:

When it comes to the critical operations of Prisoner Transport vehicles, there are several enhancements we recommend that, while not strictly essential, greatly improve functionality and safety. One such improvement is our custom-designed side and rear steps. These additions not only boost mobility for transport personnel but also streamline the process of loading and unloading inmates. By creating a more comfortable and secure entry and exit point, these steps ensure that all operations are conducted efficiently and safely.

If you’re in the market for a bus or one of our specially crafted box trucks, you’ll be happy to know that these vehicles already come equipped with the side and rear steps as standard features. This means you can reap the benefits right from the outset, without needing any further modifications.

Prisoner Transport Vehicle Interior Cage Camera SystemWhether your transport operations involve long hauls or shorter trips, we strongly recommend equipping each cage with a camera system. While our cage doors are designed to enhance visibility for inmates, adding internal cameras significantly improves oversight for the driver. This state-of-the-art camera system allows for real-time monitoring, ensuring that all activities within the transport vehicle are running smoothly, thus promoting the safety of both inmates and transport personnel. An LCD screen in the front cab clearly shows the driver all of the compartments and inmate activities.

For transports that necessitate visibility to other motorists, we offer a complete siren and emergency light kit. Our installation options include lights mounted in the vehicle’s grill and rear doors, along with the option of adding additional lights on the sides if needed. This feature is especially beneficial during emergencies, making transport vehicles more visible and audible on the road, thereby enhancing overall safety.

If visibility from the vehicle is a concern—whether due to nighttime operations or adverse weather conditions—we provide a specialized scene light package. By installing strategically placed lights, we ensure you can maintain clarity while loading or unloading inmates, no matter the time of day or external circumstances. This enhancement is crucial for facilitating smooth and safe operations during transport, allowing personnel to see clearly and manage their tasks effectively, even in challenging conditions.

Prisoner Transport Vehicle Budgets:

We are committed to helping you discover the ideal solution that aligns with your budget! The lowest budget vehicles are low roof vans with a limited amount of options.  These budget-friendly options still allow full seating capacity.  A step above this is mid-road vans with more features such as wheelchair lifts or other accessories such as cameras, scene lighting, emergency lights, sirens, seat belts, additional steps, and more.  Larger budget vehicles include bus prisoner transports and trucks with custom box shelters in the rear ranging from 15’ – 30’ or larger.
