Design Details:
This public outreach vehicle was explicitly designed for Nassau County Guidance and Counseling Services, Inc., to enhance their established medical outreach vehicle programs. It serves as a specialized unit aimed at addressing the addiction epidemic and providing support for those in recovery.
With this vehicle, our goal was to improve accessibility and deliver care directly to those in need. Its compact design allows it to navigate smaller streets and operate efficiently in rural areas. To ensure comfort regardless of the weather, we installed two air conditioning units equipped with heat strips. A backup camera was added to help maneuver the vehicle safely in all directions. Each corner is fitted with leveling jacks, which stabilize the internal workspace, even on uneven ground.
The exterior features several key components that facilitate the successful operation of this mobile medical clinic vehicle. On the driver’s side, a custom-fabricated generator compartment minimizes noise and fumes for those inside. This generator, along with batteries housed in a separate storage compartment, powers the vehicle when it’s out in the field. Additionally, this side includes a water fill and dump valve for the sinks and bathroom facilities.
On the passenger side, there’s a storage box securely mounted to the vehicle’s frame, providing extra storage space. An awning over both the entry door and the wheelchair lift access door creates a shaded and welcoming environment. This covered area, along with an exterior outlet, serves as a practical workspace for outreach events. Above the entry door, a scene light ensures visibility in various weather conditions and nighttime use.
Stepping inside, a small sliding door provides a pass-through into the cab, allowing patrons to access the leveling jack controls while keeping the vehicle secure and private. Above this opening are access doors to the electrical cabinet and attic storage.
Inside the passenger area, a bench seat creates a two-person waiting area, while next to it, a floor-to-ceiling storage cabinet accommodates equipment. Across from the entry door on the driver’s side, a check-in area features another bench seat along with a workstation and an overhead cabinet. A bathroom with a toilet is conveniently located between this area and a pocket door, with a sink positioned near the rear pocket door for easy access by all guests.
In the back section of the vehicle, there is an exam room. Although the wheelchair lift occupies a large portion of the passenger side, we’ve included a fold-up workstation at the front. A small trash can fits neatly behind the lift’s pump, and a second folding workstation is mounted on the rear wall beneath a 40″ TV monitor, facilitating Telehealth visits.
On the passenger side of this room, a diagnostic board is attached to the pocket door support wall. We custom-designed a folding exam bed to maximize usability and comfort within the limited space. An exam light is mounted on the ceiling above the bed. In the back corner, a sharps container has been mounted on the wall. A standing work counter accommodates a locking medical fridge underneath it; the fridge ensures safe storage for medications, including vaccines. Above the counter is an overhead cabinet providing storage for any equipment that needs to be stored.
